USD to RUB is the rate people check most when they are paid in dollars and spend in rubles, or are planning a trip to Russia. The live number below is a fair reference, but on this pair the rate you are quoted depends heavily on where you exchange. Here is the rate and what sits behind it.

How is the official dollar rate set now?

Until June 2024 the Central Bank of Russia based its official dollar rate on trading on the Moscow Exchange. After new US sanctions that month, the exchange stopped trading dollars and euros, and the Central Bank switched to calculating the rate from over-the-counter deals reported by banks. That official figure is still published every day and used for taxes, customs and accounting, but it is not a price you can buy at.

Can you use a foreign bank card in Russia?

In most cases, no. Visa and Mastercard suspended their operations in Russia in 2022, so cards issued outside the country generally do not work in Russian shops or ATMs. Visitors usually bring cash and exchange it at a bank inside Russia, which is why the rate at the exchange counter matters more on this trip than it would elsewhere. Rules on foreign cash have changed several times since 2022, so check the current ones before you travel.

How do you convert dollars to rubles by hand?

Multiply. If 1 USD is 80 RUB, then 50 dollars is 4,000 rubles and 200 dollars is 16,000 rubles. The 80 is only an example: take today’s rate from the box above, or let the converter do it, especially when you are comparing several exchange offices.
