USD to GBP: Convert US Dollars to British Pounds

One pound has been worth more than one dollar for most of modern history, which catches a lot of American visitors off guard: prices in London look familiar until you convert them. Here is the live USD to GBP rate and what it means in practice when you are spending dollars in a pound economy.

Why UK prices feel higher than they look
A £30 dinner is not $30. At a rate around 1.27 dollars per pound it is closer to $38, so a rough mental adjustment of adding a quarter to any pound price will keep you in the right range. There is a second, less obvious difference: UK prices include VAT and menus do not expect tipping at American levels, so the final bill often lands closer than the sticker shock suggests.
Watch for the conversion you did not ask for
UK card machines frequently offer to bill you in dollars. Decline every time. That is dynamic currency conversion, and the rate comes from the terminal provider rather than your bank, usually several percent away from mid-market. Choosing pounds and letting your own card convert is nearly always cheaper.
How to convert dollars to pounds

- Add your card’s foreign-transaction fee, if it has one, to see the real cost.
What moves the pound
Sterling responds to Bank of England interest-rate decisions, UK inflation and growth data, and broad market sentiment. It has a reputation for moving sharply on political news, more so than most major currencies, which is why a rate you checked a few weeks ago may not be the one you get.
