AUD to USD: Convert Australian Dollars to US Dollars
Currency pair · 2026-08-22 · 4 min read
For Australians, AUD to USD is the rate behind US online shopping, software subscriptions, travel to the States and most globally priced services. It is also one of the most traded pairs in the world, nicknamed the “Aussie”. Here is the live rate and what actually drives it.

What drives the Australian dollar?
Three things, mostly. Commodity prices come first: Australia exports iron ore, coal and natural gas, so its currency tends to follow those markets. Second is Chinese demand, since China is the largest buyer of those exports, which makes the Aussie an unusual proxy for Chinese growth. Third is the interest-rate gap between the Reserve Bank of Australia and the US Federal Reserve.
Why is the Aussie called a risk currency?
Because it rises when investors feel confident and falls when they do not, more sharply than currencies like the yen or the Swiss franc. In a calm market it drifts with commodity prices. In a nervous one it can drop several percent in days for reasons that have nothing to do with Australia. If you are converting a large amount, that volatility is the main thing to be aware of.
